Eating Healthy During the Holidays

The holiday season is officially here! When celebrating with friends and family this holiday season, it's important to be mindful of what we eat. In this blog post, CenterLight Healthcare Dietitian Kaitlyn Hempfling discusses how to eat healthy during the holiday season.

Tips for a Healthier Holiday Meal:

  • Stick to your usual meal times. Maintaining your regular eating schedule helps prevent becoming overly hungry, making it easier to make mindful food choices and avoid overeating.
  • Lighten up favorite recipes. Small tweaks can make a big difference! Use a little less butter or cream, or substitute with healthier alternatives like Greek yogurt, to keep beloved dishes delicious but lighter.
  • Opt for water. Staying hydrated with water or zero-calorie drinks can reduce your empty calorie intake leaving room for nutritious food.
  • Start with vegetables. Snack on appetizers centered around vegetables. They help curb hunger while saving your appetite for the main course.
  • Skip the turkey skin. Turkey skin is high in fat, so peeling it off is an easy way to cut back without missing out on flavor.
  • Wait a little before dessert. Give your stomach time to settle before reaching for dessert. This pause can help you assess your fullness and prevent overindulging in sweets.
  • Slow down and savor each bite. Eating slowly not only enhances enjoyment but also allows your body time to signal when it’s satisfied, promoting healthier digestion.
  • Use a smaller plate. A smaller plate can make portions look more generous, supporting portion control and satisfaction..
  • Keep serving dishes off the table. With serving dishes out of reach, you’ll be less tempted to go for seconds and can better tune in to your hunger cues.
  • Pack up leftovers right after the meal. Boxing up leftovers prevents mindless nibbling after the meal, setting you up for a healthier tomorrow.
  • Take a walk. Walking after eating aids digestion, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and can even reduce feelings of sluggishness. It’s a great way to connect with family and friends, get some fresh air, and balance out the indulgence. Just a short 10- to 15-minute walk can make a difference and leave you feeling more energized and satisfied.

By following these tips, you can embrace the season’s celebrations while also nourishing your body. Remember, it’s all about balance and making mindful choices that keep you feeling your best!
