Meet CenterLight PACE participant Lindsay Ray Jr. | Staying Active, Connected and Independent
Like many of our participants, Lindsay Ray Jr. looks back on his life and reflects on the memories he has made with his family, community, and friends. He spent much of his life working, helping care for family members, and staying busy. After retiring, he faced a major lifestyle change and wanted something that would keep him active and give him somewhere to go.
In 2021, he learned about CenterLight Healthcare Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). He enrolled after seeing it could help him get out of the house, meet people, and stay active. Now he attends three days a week and enjoys every minute of it.
A New Family
The sense of connection is one of the things he values about his time at CenterLight. Whether he is doing a puzzle, participating in arts and crafts, or simply spending time around others, there is always something for him to do.
“It’s another part of my family. CenterLight has helped me calm down. I enjoy being here. I get something out of it every time I come in here.”
Staying Active and Supporting His Independence
Having access to support while still being able to return home and enjoy his life and family is an important part of maintaining the lifestyle that matters to him. When talking about CenterLight's rehabilitation services, he says,
"It helps me get around because I’m losing my balance on my left side. The rehab done me good. I’m going there to exercise my arms and legs. It keeps me active."
Making New Memories
Lindsay enjoys the activities, big holiday celebrations, and outings with other participants at the Day Health Center.
One experience that stands out was attending a New York Yankees game with CenterLight. Before the outing, he had attended only two other baseball games in his life.
When the day finally arrived, he was so excited that he made sure he was ready before transportation picked him up.
"I had to make sure I was dressed and ready when the bus comes. That was a good baseball game. I enjoyed every minute of it."
On the ride to the baseball game, he looked out the window, reminiscing about the neighborhood he enjoyed spending time in when he was younger with family and friends.
Experiences like that gave him something he values: an adventure that creates new memories.
Living Life to the Fullest
CenterLight is only one part of Lindsay Ray Jr.’s story. Outside of the center, family remains an important part of his life. He enjoys being an uncle to his nieces and nephews, and he is a deacon at his grandfather’s church.
He continues to approach this stage of his life with gratitude and an appreciation for who he is.
“I love who I am. I love what I’m doing.”
For him, enjoying life means staying involved, spending time with family and friends, and finding reasons to keep moving forward. When asked what advice he gives to others about getting older, he says,
“Take your life to the fullest. Enjoy your life while you can and have a prayer on your mind and a song in your heart as you go out.”
He spent his life staying busy and being connected to his family. Retirement didn't change who he is, and CenterLight has given him another place to keep doing the things that make him feel like himself.
