For Yuzhu’s Family, CenterLight Made All the Difference
Twice a week, mornings in Yuzhu Sui's home start the same way. Before anything else, she has one question for her daughter, Nicole:
"What am I going to wear to CenterLight?"
It's a small question. But for Nicole, it says everything about how far her mother has come.
A New Beginning, Interrupted
Several years ago, Nicole brought her parents to the United States, hoping to give them a new chapter close to family. But just months after they arrived, her mother suffered a stroke.
"Before CenterLight, it was horrible," Nicole remembers.
Overnight, Nicole became a full-time caregiver. She cared for her mother around the clock — managing her recovery, appointments, and daily needs. Her father needed support, too, and Nicole was doing it all alone.
Then, while her mother was in the hospital, someone told Nicole about CenterLight Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).
A Place for Both Mom and Dad
In May 2022, both of Nicole's parents enrolled at CenterLight — and everything began to change.
Today, Yuzhu attends the CenterLight PACE center twice a week, and those days are full. Trips to the park. Supermarket outings. Arts and crafts. Bingo with friends. And after lunch, exercise in the gym with the therapy team.
"At home, she had nothing to do — and that's not good for the mind," Nicole says. "Here, she has so many friends and activities. She's always happy, excited, and interested."
The staff have made all the difference. "Everyone is so professional and patient," Nicole says. "They're always asking how they can help."
Her father Qing Lai may be the program's biggest fan of all. "Bad weather, a big snowstorm, a heat wave — it doesn't matter," Nicole laughs. "Whenever CenterLight is open, my dad will come."
Peace of Mind, at Last
For Nicole, having both parents cared for in one place gave her peace of mind. When asked what she would tell another family going through what hers went through, she didn't hesitate.
"When an older person goes to the hospital, CenterLight can offer everything to help. For me and my family, it is different from anywhere else. I will keep my parents at CenterLight forever," she says.
Her mother agrees — she shows it twice a week, when she's picking out her outfit for the center.
