Step Safely Into Autumn: Simple Steps to Prevent Falls
< ver todas las entradas del blog
As the weather gets colder and days get darker, take a little extra time to stay safe.
Getting Up at Night?
If you need to use the bathroom at night, don't rush! Keep your path to the bathroom clear and use the night-light.
- STOP: Pause before getting out of bed.
- SIT: Sit on the edge of the bed.
- STEADY: Turn on a light and make sure you feel steady.
- GO: Use your cane or walker if recommended and walk slowly.

Early Morning?
When you wake up, take your time. If you often feel dizzy or unsteady, make sure that you let your medical provider know. CenterLight Healthcare Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) participants should notify their care team.

Walking Outside
Autumn weather can make walking more difficult.
- Watch for wet leaves, rain, puddles, and uneven sidewalks.
- Use handrails when available.
- Use your cane or walker as recommended.
- Don't rush!
- If conditions are unsafe, wait or ask for help.
Check Your Shoes
Choose shoes that fit well, stay on your feet, and have good traction. Avoid walking in socks or loose slippers on slippery floors.

Quick Safety Check
Take 2 minutes to look around your home.
☐ Is your path clear?
☐ Do you have good lighting?
☐ Are there loose rugs or cords?
☐ Can you easily reach your cane or walker?
☐ Is your nighttime path to the bathroom safe?
Pause. Get Steady. Then Go.
You don't have to give up your independence to prevent falls. Small changes can help you stay safe, active, and independent.
